Scandinavia Meets Germany: A Forum for Young Leaders

Berlin, May 12th - 16th, 2009

The Institute for Cultural Diplomacy (ICD) is delighted to announce the launch of a new program that we have developed as part of our Young Leaders Forums series. Scandinavia Meets Germany: A Forum for Young Leaders (SMG) will take place in Berlin from May 12th - 16th, 2009. This weeklong event has been designed to explore and improve cultural relations between Scandinavia and Germany. The ICD is now accepting applications for participants with an active interest in the topic.

The Institute for Cultural Diplomacy is an international, not-for-profit, non-governmental organization concerned with the promotion of intercultural understanding. Our activity includes the conducting of research into cultural diplomacy and the organisation of bilateral and multilateral programs and leadership initiatives. To learn more about the ICD, please visit our website:  http://www.culturaldiplomacy.org

The ICD Programs have been developed to facilitate intercultural exchange at the grass roots, civil society and political levels. They bring together Young Leaders from across the world for an analysis of cultural diplomacy, an exploration of the relationship between their cultures, and to create a sustainable network between likeminded individuals. Following the completion of the programs, the participants are encouraged to use this network to develop their own leadership initiatives in the field of cultural diplomacy.

The follow-up initiatives are supported by the ICD through a Facebook online forum and personal consultation, and allow the ICD principals of inter-cultural relations based on dialogue, understanding and trust to spread much further.

Cultural Diplomacy in Europe: A Forum for Young Leaders

Scandinavia Meets Germany: A Forum for Young Leaders was created from the recognition that the countries in Northern Europe, and the relationship between them, are fundamental to the future of Europe as a whole. We are aware of and acknowledge the many and significant cultural differences between the respective countries included under the term Scandinavia. The focus of the forum has been chosen to acknowledge the value in considering the relations between Germany and the respective countries of Scandinavia at the same time, and also to recognize the political and cultural bonds that do exist between the Scandinavian countries.

The Forum will produce a dynamic, informed group of Young Leaders who are aware of the potential for Cultural Diplomacy and have the necessary resources to organize their own initiatives. These Young Leaders will have access to and be part of the Young Leaders Online Network, where they can join the group of SMG alumni, and communicate with participants from other ICD Forums. It is intended that these participants will then cooperate on independent initiatives together in their future. Ultimately the SMG Forum will improve understanding between Scandinavia and Germany, and enhance future cooperation and exchange.

The forum will not only focus on cultural relations, but will also explore economic and political relations between Scandinavia and Germany for two reasons: firstly, it is important that organizations and individuals facilitating cultural exchange are aware of relations in other areas to ensure their programs are successful. Secondly, cultural relations overlap and are linked to political and economic relations in many areas.

What’s New in Brussels 2009

Recent Developments in European Policies and Programmes

30 January 2009 Brussels, Belgium

Since the launch of the seminar series in 2004, the first European Policy Seminar each year provides an overview of recent developments in European higher education policy. Unless you have, in the meantime, acquired psychic qualities to learn about these developments, you are warmly invited to join us on Friday, 30 January. “What’s new in Brussels 2009” will present the latest information on, and analysis of, the Erasmus Mundus II Programme, other EU higher education schemes with non-European countries, as well as the plans for the Bologna Process after 2010 and the European Commission’s ambitions for global cooperation in science and technology.

Other issues on the agenda are the French EU Presidency’s plans for a new approach to global higher education rankings, and a case study of global outreach in the form of the Erasmus Mundus Alumni Association. ACA is proud to once again have been able to win high-level experts as presenters, such as Vito Borelli, Sigi Gruber, and Peter van der Hijden from the European Commission and DAAD’s Angelika Sachsenröder. The event will be chaired by ACA Director Bernd Wächter.

Those of you that are no newcomers know that this event is extremely popular. The limited number of seats fill up quickly, so don’t forget to register.

LIVENARCH IV 09-11 July 2009

Karadeniz Technical University invites you to attend the 4th International Conference of Livable Environments & Architecture which will be held on July 09-11, 2009 in Trabzon, Turkey. The theme of the conference is stated as “(RE/DE) CONSTRUCTIONS IN ARCHITECTURE”. The scientific program is expected to address the interests of various design related professionals from different countries. For more information please see our web site: www.livenarch2009.org and do not hesitate to contact the Conference Secretariat for further questions. We look forward to welcoming you in Trabzon in July 2009. Prof. Dr. Şengül Öymen GÜR Conference Chair Karadeniz Technical University Department of Architecture

LIVENARCH IV 09-11 July 2009 Trabzon, Turkey The conference is now established worldwide as a major event. In 2009 the organizer seeks to exceed the expectations generated by the first three conferences. The conference is supported by several national chambers and associations of architecture and national research institutes. It will host top-level speakers, both professionals and academics, from Turkey and from the international scene. Parallel events will include demonstrations by companies active in architectural technologies and materials, round-table evening discussions, poster exhibitions, and competitions. (RE/DE)

CONSTRUCTIONS IN ARCHITECTURE The processes of globalization and its implications for architectural design in specific localities were discussed with some success at the previous LIVENARCH (LIVable ENvironment ARCHitecture) conference (2007). In order to take the discussion of the globe vs context conflicts a step forward, the organizers of LIVENARCH IV have decided to focus the discussion on the traditional social constructs that are at a risk of being transformed haphazardly and those transformations implications for urban and architectural constructions. To yield the gist of the conference a succinct definition of the word construct might be helpful; a “social construction or social construct is any phenomenon “invented” or “constructed” by participants in a particular culture or society, existing because people agree to behave as if it exists or follow certain conventional rules… The idea of Berger and Luckmanns “Social Construction of Reality” was that actors interacting together form, over time, typifications or mental representations of each others actions, and that these typifications eventually become habitualized into reciprocal roles played by the actors in relation to each other. When these reciprocal roles become routinized, the typified reciprocal interactions are said to be institutionalized. In the process of this institutionalization, meaning is embedded and institutionalized into individuals and society - knowledge and peoples conception of (and therefore belief regarding) what reality is becomes embedded into the institutional fabric and structure of society, and social reality is therefore said to be socially constructed.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_construction) Change and transformation of social constructs and physical constructions over time are inevitable. If, however, the processes of change are not maneuvered in the direction of the desired goals and objectives of a society they may lead to a sense of loss and to what appear to be undesirable futures for the arts, architecture and the whole cultural, social and biological environment. If social constructs fail to adapt to the modern world or are too stubborn to incorporate the new impositions they decay, then the whole fabric of society may well decay. What are the alternatives?

LIVENARCH IV will be a forum for the discussion of the topic of social constructs and physical constructions. The goal is to discuss a wide variety of social constructs that can be elaborated as constructions, reconstructions and deconstructions in architecture. The desire is to focus on the architectural consequences of the changes, purposeful or not, in social constructs.

CONFERENCE SUB THEMES The conference theme as set out above is not well-structured. It is thus open to a number of interpretations that will lead to a variety of topics for discussion. We, the organizers, nevertheless, take the liberty to propose a set of very general themes and sub-themes for discussion at the conference. These suggestions can serve as propositions for possible contributions to LIVENARCH IV. They will also almost certainly lead to the final organization of the topics for discussion and the conference. 1) Constructions as society and individual: Review of theoretical foundations and frameworks of social constructs with respect to emerging concepts. Philosophical, ethical & social implications for architecture 2) Constructions as history and theory of architecture Review of meta-theories of architecture, arts and technology Integrative approaches, validated discourses 3) Constructions as architectural design methods and tools: i.e. Methods vs. approaches, guidelines vs. pleasure, etc. 4) Constructions as professional organizations Schools of architecture International institutes of architecture and architectural research Chambers of architecture, etc. 5) Constructions as “Constructions” Structural and constructional innovations Ecology and energy issues in advancing building technologies POSTER SESSION Poster submissions in line with the conference theme are encouraged. Two standard sheets [100X70cm] are welcome. A team of key speakers and referees will be instituted as the jury in-situ for open discussions and evaluation. The first three of contributors will be awarded prizes of excellence to be determined by the chair and the jury.

Cultural Diplomacy in Europe: A Forum for Young Leaders

Cultural Diplomacy in Europe: A Forum for Young Leaders

The Cultural Diplomacy in Europe: a Forum for Young Leaders (CDE) is designed with the intention of bringing together young, influential people from Europe and across the world, in order for them to gain an insight into the need and practice of Cultural Diplomacy in the European context through workshops, lectures and debates. Although more Europeans work, travel or study abroad than ever before, cultural divides continue to exist. There is nothing inherently confrontational about cultural differences, but when they lead to prejudices and stereotypes they can become obstacles for cooperation. The Cultural Diplomacy in Europe Forum will examine the origin of these divides within Europe and how they influence economic, political and societal relations on the continent. Topics that will be discussed are, among others: the question of the European identity, nationalism, relations between “Western” and “Eastern” Europe within the context of EU enlargement and migration. Furthermore the Forum will explore how Cultural Diplomacy is conducted today and how Cultural Diplomacy initiatives can enable Europeans to overcome differences in the future.
